Case Study: Uganda
The Ugandan chapter of the Society of Jesus has
become involved in developing and constructing a
modern secondary school located near the city of
Gulu, some 355km north of the country’s capital,
Kampala. The school will be built using the Hydraform
Building System and is planned to be developed in
phases so as to lower the financial burden.
The project was incepted after a local family in Gulu
donated 98.5 acres of land to fulfil its long-held dream.
The school is intended to house boarders and to draw
students from the entire region. It has been designed to
accommodate 1 200 boys and girls. Also included in the
plans are faculty housing, a Jesuit residence and two
convents for sisters.
An important factor that influenced the choice of
construction methodology was the need for the school to
be environmentally and culturally sensitive. Hydraform soil
cement blocks fit that profile because there is no need to
cut down trees for burning in the curing process – that is
accomplished with a combination of water and sunlight.
Furthering Africa’s
education
Meanwhile, a little way down the road, the Society of Jesus
has extended education opportunities in northern Uganda.
